Do Your Scales Lie?

Do Your Scales Lie?

How did I manage to put on 3kg over the weekend? I have been working out really hard and I just don’t understand why my weight isn’t dropping? My scales must be broken.

Does this sound familiar?

I have been doing really good with my diet and exercise, weight has been dropping and then all of a sudden my weight plateaued. Now my weight has started to rise. Do your scales lie?

Normally in this situation, we do 1 of 2 things:

  1. Give up – You aren’t seeing the results that you feel you deserve.
  2. Eat less – In a last-ditch effort to get get the scales moving in the right direction, you consume less food.

Do Your Scales Lie?

Most likely your scales are not lying. It is definitely possible to put on 2-3kg over the weekend. Sometimes even over 1 day but that weight gain may not be coming from fat. What could be causing your increase in weight?

  1. You jumped on the scales at a different time of day – always track weight at the same time of day and in the same conditions. Ideally in the morning before you have eaten.
  2. You consumed more water – If you consumed an extra 2 litres of water then you could weigh 2kg heavier on the scale.
  3. You consumed more carbohydrates – carbs are not evil before you ask. The body breaks down carbohydrates into glycogen. We then store glycogen in our muscles and liver for energy. This would lead to an increase in weight. Eating 125g of carbohydrate could lead to the body storing an extra 500g of bodyweight.

Ask yourself this question – What is my goal, to lose weight? or to look and feel better?

More often than not the goal is to look and feel better. You could:

  1. Measure the circumference of your waist, hips and limbs.
  2. Take a body fat measurement.
  3. Track using progress photos.

Each of the above methods of tracking progress would help to determine if you are making a change to your body shape. If your waist, hips, body fat and progress photos all show improvements does the weight on the scale even matter?
